Spa Day at Home: DIY 12 Step Natural Facial Checklist

When is the best time to do your at home spa facial?

Do your spa day at home spa facial in the evening.  Never put on makeup after a facial which is why I recommend you do your facials after dinner time and when you know you’re staying in for the rest of the night.

What cleanser do I personally use for my at home spa facial?

Remove heavy makeup with Sephora’s Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover using a cotton pad. I love this product because it doesn’t contain any alcohol & it literally removes all my waterproof eye makeup. My skin is sensitive and I didn’t feel any burning sensation or feel irritation. It’s also free of parabens, sulfates, and phthalates and is also vegan. I love that they make it as clean as possible.

Spa Day at Home: How to Have a Great Facial

The search term “spa day at home” has been skyrocketing on Pinterest since so many of us now have more time than we are used to. Since spas have been on a mandatory lock down due to COVID-19 we don’t have any choice but to continue our spa treatments at home. Besides the convenience of an at home spa facial we also save time and money.  And that’s a good thing right.

If you’ve never done your own spa day at home facial or have never experienced one at a spa then I’m glad you are reading this.

I’ve learned so much about how to achieve healthy, clear skin since 1983. That year alone I went through four beauty pageants, two of which were overseas. I’ve had hundreds of makeup artists’ work on my face over the course of many years.  I’ve had events & obligations as a beauty queen and modeling contracts. Then I went on to teach modeling & makeup artistry which led me to operating a luxury, wellness day spa. So over the years I have seen, done and learned a ton about skin care.

So queue up your playlist, light a fancy candle, and prepare for some much-deserved self-care using this checklist for an easy, relaxing spa day at home facial done in the comfort of your own home.

First, I’m going to assume you have the right products for your skin type and skin condition. That’s important since you want to get the best results. If you aren’t confident you have the right products I’m going to recommend some clean beauty & natural skin care products that I believe will do wonders for your face. I’ll only recommend products that I have used and know work!

Let’s begin.

Let’s start with the supplies. You will need:

      • Face products
      • Optional: Steep two chamomile tea bags,f squeeze out the excess liquid, and allow them to cool.
      • 1 pillow case

Step 1: Best time

      • Do your spa day at home spa facial in the evening.
      • Never put on makeup after a facial which is why I recommend you do your facials after dinner time and when you know you’re staying in for the rest of the night.

Step 2: Get comfy and set the mood

Step 3: Cleanse

  • Remove heavy makeup with Sephora’s Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover using a cotton pad.

  • Cleanse your face using warm water and a face cloth.

Product recommendations:

      • If you have congested and oily skin I recommend Indee Lee’s Purifying Face Wash.  Java Plum, Orange and Lavender extracts promote a clearer, brighter complexion while leaving skin soft and supple.
      • If you have sensitive skin, try Indee Lee’s Rosehip Cleanser.  Containing; Rosehip Seed Oil, Red Seaweed extracts and Vitamins A, C and E designed to leave skin calmed, nourished and protected from the elements.
      • If you have combination skin Indee Lee’s Brightening Cleanser is the one for you. When the seasons changes I use this cleanser in the summer since my t-zone tends to get a little oily. You can literally smell the strawberries. I love it! This cleanser makes me feel happy. It has a nourishing blend of Strawberry Seed Oil, hydrolyzed Wheat Protein and Tomato extracts. High in antioxidants this cleanser helps strengthen, firm and protect the skin and also doubles as an exfoliating mask if left on for five minutes before rinsing. You gotta love multi-tasking products especially during those lazy days.

Step 4: Exfoliate

Exfoliation is a must. Don’t even think twice about NOT doing it. You’ve got to slough off those dead skin cells so that your products will perform better. When people tell me their products are ‘so so’ and it’s not really working the first thing I ask is if they exfoliate and how often they exfoliate.

When I am doing my weekly facials I use Indee Lee’s Radiance Renewal Peel. I love the convenience of this product. No mess, no rinsing required I just let the pad do its thing.

      • The perfect blend of vitamin C, Java Plum and Banana extracts will leave your skin brighter & with a more even-toned complexion.
      • Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) from Caviar Lime combine with Mango derived Beta-Carotene, Vitamin A and Glycerin to leave skin looking soft, supple and luminous.
      • Ideal for all skin types. Use three times a week. Use once a week if you have sensitive skin.

How to use:

      • After you have cleansed and pat your face dry with a face cloth wipe the peel over your face avoiding the eye and lip areas.

Since the Radiance Renewal Peel isn’t advisable for the lip area you’ll need Pure Fiji’s Coconut Sugar Lip Polish

Why you’ll love Pure Fiji’s Coconut Sugar Lip Polish:

      • Derived from the coconut palm flower, coconut sugar has a fine texture making it gentler on the skin and great for delicate areas such as the lips! This fine sugar will buff away dry, flaky skin. Coconut sugar is also high in antioxidants.
      • The emollient properties of cocoa butter act as a protective barrier by supplying and retaining moisture in the lips and skin. Cocoa butter also contains antioxidant vitamins A, C and E, which can help slow the signs of ageing.
      • Pure Fiji’s award winning organic oil blend containing cold-pressed Coconut, Dilo, Macadamia and Sikeci oils hydrate and nourish skin with vital nutrients. Contains vitamins; A, B, C & E and Omegas 3, 6, 7 & 9. High in Antioxidants. Vitamin E softens lips, protects against free radicals.

How to use:

      • Moisten lips with water and use your fingers to apply the scrub gently onto lips in soft, circular motion to buff away dead skin cells.
      • Wipe off with a damp cloth or rinse with water to reveal soft smooth lips.

Step 5: Steaming

Steaming is so relaxing and I love smelling all the different herbs and essentials oils. Steaming opens up your pores to make it easier for you to do your extractions. When preparing my own spa day at home I prefer to use fresh herbs but dried ones are fine too.

Here are 10 steaming recipes designed for different skin concerns:

Sensitive skin

      • 4 ml dried white willow bark
      • 2 ml dried calendula
      • 2 ml dried peppermint or tea bag

Oily skin

      • 1 tbsp dried rosemary
      • 1 tbsp dried sage
      • 1 tbsp peppermint or tea bag

Acneic skin

      • 2 tsp dried lavender flowers
      • 2 tsp dried sage leaves
      • 3 drops tea tree essential oil

Mature skin

      • 1 tbsp dried rosemary
      • Chamomile tea bag
      • 1 drop of frankincense essential oil

Here’s the correct way to do a spa day at home facial steam:

      • Find a comfortable table and chair.
      • Tie your hair back to ensure it stays away from your face.
      • Pour 6 cups of boiling water to a bowl, a little bigger than the size of your face.
      • Add your favorite combination of herbs, flowers, essential oils, or other ingredients from the list above to the bowl. Mix slowly.
      • Lean over the bowl mixture, keep your face about 8 inches from the water, and drape a towel over your head so the steam has no chance of escaping. You can control the heat by raising or lowering your head over the water. Don’t forget to breathe. ☺
      • Steam your face for 10 minutes.
      • If you decide to do extractions you need to do them ASAP while your pores are still open.

Step 6: Extractions

Extractions should really be left to the pros so I’m hesitant to even tell you how to do this. If you do this incorrectly you will end up scarring your face especially those of you who have medium to dark skin.

Blackheads are typically in the surface so after you’ve had some training you could probably do that on your own, but they have to be ready to come out. You can’t force them.

How to extract blackheads VERY carefully:

      • Take two cotton pads and spray a little Indee Lee CoQ-10 toner on them and then press the cotton pads on both sides of the blackhead and gently press down.
      • Ideally, you’ll only do this once. But it’s OK to try two or three times total, moving your fingers around the area.
      • It’s normal to see clear fluid and blood after you’ve squeezed it.
      • If nothing comes out after you’ve made three attempts it means it’s not ready to come out OR maybe your steam wasn’t done correctly.

When it comes to cysts which is this white hard lump under the skin don’t even think about touching those. You’ll need to use retinol as a treatment. I’ll cover that in future blog posts.

Step 7: Facial massage

The best part of getting a facial at a spa is the massage portion. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve slept through it, it’s heavenly when you have an esthetician work their magic fingers.

While you may not get the full benefit of a spa massage jade rollers are a simple alternative.

You’ve probably seen jade rollers popping up for the last couple of years or so. They are not new. People have been using jade facial rollers to massage the face since the 17th century.

Benefits of using face rollers include; flushing toxins from the skin, smoothens fine lines, decreases dark circles and under-eye bags, eases tension headaches, temporarily reduces swelling, calms inflammation, heals pimples, and brightens the skin.

How to use: Apply a few drops of Indee Lee’s Squalane Facial Oil to your face then gently roll the jade up, down, and all across your skin until the product is absorbed. Do this for about four minutes.

Step 8: Mask treatment with eye mask

When it comes to a mask you can either make your own or try Pure Fiji’s natural masks. The Dilo and Coconut Hydrating Masque is ideal for dry, dehydrated, sensitive skin and those showing some signs of ageing. The Papaya Purifying Enzyme Masque is great for oily skin.

How to use:

      • Pure Fiji’s masks come with a beautiful brush application. Apply a thin layer to clean skin, avoiding the eye area.
      • Leave on for 30 minutes.
      • Optional: Place a cold chamomile or green tea bag over your eyes to de-puff your under eyes.
      • It’s time to rinse. Place a warm, very wet washcloth over your face and hold it onto your skin for a few seconds. Repeat this a few times to help loosen up and dissolve the face mask from your skin. The mask will come off easier and be gentler for your skin if you take it slowly.
      • Can be left on as an overnight masque by removing excess masque with cotton pads. If you decide to that at this point you will continue the rest of the steps tomorrow morning.
      • Use 2-3 times a week.

face toners

Step 9: Toner

I absolutely love how Indee Lee’s COQ-10 TONER is alcohol-free (that’s important!) and how it feels on my face – it’s so refreshing.

The Hyaluronic Acid and Aloe Vera based essence helps to hydrate and re-balance your skin. Formulated with antioxidant CoQ-10 and Sage, this non-drying formula leaves skin primed and protected from pollution and environmental aggressors. It’s great for all skin types especially those with combination and oily skin type.

How to use:

After you rinse your mask, mist toner on skin and wipe away any excess residue with a cotton pad, avoiding the eye area.

Step 10: Serum

Indee Lee’s Stem Cell Serum contains Echinacea Stem Cells designed to improve the appearance of skin firmness, Alpine Rose helps protect against environmental stressors while nourishing Bamboo extracts and Hyaluronic Acid leave skin hydrated and supple.

How to use:

      • Immediately apply 2-4 drops before applying any of Indee Lee’s moisturizers.

Step 11: Moisturize

Great for fine lines, environmental protection, ideal for normal, dry and sun damaged skin Indee Lee’s Super fruit Facial Cream helps skin appear smoother, supple and with a healthy youthful glow.

Enriched with Vitamin C and skin smoothing natural Peptides, this reparative blend nourishes and brightens the complexion. Hyaluronic Acid hydrates and AHAs gently help with texture and tone. Pomegranate, Acai Berry and Acerola Fruit extracts work together with Algae to condition and protect the complexion from environmental stressors. Sounds amazing right?

For those with oily skin I recommend Indee Lee’s Active Oil-Free Moisturizer.

How to use:

Gently massage the cream into your face, neck, and décolleté.

For the final step you’ll want to finish off with Indee Lee’s I-Waken Eye Serum. Light textured daily eye serum with Horse Chestnut, Mountain Ash Bud and Witch Hazel to address dark circles and puffiness. Calming Chamomile, Arnica and Cornflower soothe and refresh the delicate eye area. Antioxidant Spirulina and Blackcurrant Leaf extracts hydrate, nourish and protect, while powerful humectants leave skin with a more smooth and firm appearance.

How To Use:

Gently apply to the eye contour lightly tapping your fingers on the delicate skin surrounding your eyes. Use morning and evening to soothe, hydrate and rejuvenate.

Step 12: Change your pillow case to complete your spa day at home.

Now that you have a clean, fresh face doesn’t it deserve to lay on something soft and clean? The worst thing you can do is have all that dust, dirt, and dry skin flakes get back on your face from your pillow case. Sounds kinda of yucky. Don’t forget to place your clean beauty products in your skin care fridge too. They will make your natural skin care producsts last longer too!

I absolutely make time for my weekly spa day at home facials. If you really want beautiful, radiant skin it’s important that you stick with a consistent routine. With so much going on these days it’s easy to forget why we need to take care ourselves but we need to do so more than ever. Be good to yourself. Breathe. Sweet Dreams.
