Athleisure wear to my rescue. These are crazy times and because of the devastating pandemic many of us are still home bound. If you’re still working from home and you’re looking to combine home life and work life together then you need to think athleisure wear. In fact the trend “working from home” is up 170% and “work from home outfit ideas” is also up 82% on Pinterest. 

Even before COVID-19 our lives were more hectic than ever before so finding comfortable, practical, yet stylish clothes that you can wear all day long are in demand. 

I have been wearing this athleisure wear fashion trend for some time now without realizing it. Hey I’m from Vancouver, the birthplace of Lululemon and its fanatical fan base. First, I love comfort and I am busy so when I’m doing my errands this is the style I wear. When I work-out or if I have to go out and meet a friend for a quick matcha or do an errand I slap on a nice sweater or jacket, I got my Louis Vuitton bag, spritz on my Herbivore  Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist and we’re ready to go. I also work from home so this style is perfect for me all year round! 

What the Heck is Athleisure?

If you checked Wikipedia here’s how they defined it.  Athleisure is a fabricated style of clothing typically worn during athletic activities and in other settings, such as at the workplace, at school, or at other casual or social occasions.

The beautiful thing about athleisure is that it’s both practical, chic and completely fashionable. The combination of cool sporty styles along with ready to wear garments is more than just a trend. For me it reflects my overall healthy lifestyle. And I do believe it’s here to stay. 

Athleisure Wear Essentials Checklist

Step 1: You will always have the following basics and then you’ll add additional pieces to this base. These are the essentials you will always need starting with:

  • Athletic T-shirt (or tunic if you’re not going to workout)
  • Athletic leggings or joggers (if you want to dress them up a bit and you’re not going to the gym you can also use leather pants or a skirt)
  • Sneakers or slides 
  • Baseball cap or beanies
  • Sunglasses
  • Handbags
  • Scarf (fall/winter)

Step 2: Layer step 1 with one of these options.

  • Option 1: Jacket or coat or vest (Leather jacket, denim jacket, wool coat, trench coat, utility jacket, moto jacket, puffer vest)
  • Option 2: Sweatshirt or hoodie
  • Option 3: Long cardigan sweater

Step 3: Color

I would go with neutral colors first like white, black, grey until you get used to putting the different outfits together and then you can add a pop of color to your outfit to make it more fun. 

11 Athleisure Wear Style Tips

  1. I like wearing them with my high-end pieces like my Louis Vuitton bag and Tory Burch glasses. It’s a great way to take your athleisure to the next level especially if you’re shopping or going out on a lunch date with a friend. 
  2. Because you’re just starting your athleisure wardrobe with neutral colors you can also play with patterns. Striped t-shirts or pants are a great way to start. If you don’t like stripes, think of cute graphics for your t-shirts. 
  3. Choose pieces based on your body type

Be mindful of your body type. There will some pieces that will look better on you than others. For example, short jackets that sit on my waist are not flattering for me because I have a ectomorph body shape. Long coats and cardigans are more flattering for my figure. 

  1. Dirty old sneakers are a big no-no

Pick up a pair of sleek and chic sneakers and keep them clean. 

  1. Jewelry

Keep your jewelry simple. You’re not exactly going to wear those bauble necklaces. A pair of gold or silver hoop earrings or a thin chain necklace is all you need. 

  1. Feel free to mix different fabrics like denim cotton, leather, and obviously high-performance sports fabrics.
  2. Keep all your garments and accessories clean and in good condition. No threads hanging, no loose buttons, stained clothes, etc. Keep it polished. 
  3. You’re not restricted to t-shirts and tunics. If you want to show off your six-pack heck go for a stylish sports bra under a jacket. 
  4. If you have long t-shirts you can tie them in a rose knot around your waist.
  5. Pair a crop top with high-waisted pants for a stylish and easy athleisure look.
  6. If you’re going to the gym and doing something else afterwards then you may need a light jacket especially in the summer months. But layering is a lot of fun in the cooler months.

Athleisure wear is not just for going to the gym. Athleisure wear can be used for a lot of things: functional, “boring”, chic, etc. Whether you’re working out, working from home, or just lounging, athleisure is really coming in handy now as more people are spending their days indoors.
